Waterbuoy

With Christmas rapidly approaching, we’re flat out at Nare putting together our Christmas gift range.  We’ve a number of great products, including a lovely brass tide clock and our great value XM Offshore Suit, but possibly my favourite is the remarkable Waterbuoy.  This ingenious device is a keyring that inflates on contact with water, enabling you to retrieve keys, phones, cameras etc that you drop overboard.  The device first reached the public eye via the inventors appearence on TV’s Dragons Den and is to my mind the perfect stocking filler for anyone who goes near water.

Christmas is coming…

Frighteningly, Christmas is just two months away.  In preparation, all of us at Nare have been heads down putting together a range of Christmas gifts.  I think we’ve got some great stuff, including beautiful solid brass barometers and clocks, some great thermal boots and the ever popular XM Offshore Suit.  Anyhow, there’s lots of speculation in the press as to how the retail sector is going to fare over Christmas, so here’s hoping that the chandlery market will remain reasonably buoyant…

Yachting and the credit crunch

Signs that the general economic outlook may be starting to impact the yachting market became visible when Beneteau issued a warning of lower than expected sales for 2009.  Beneteau, which employs over 6,000 people globally experienced a strong 2008, but the warning for 2009 impacted the share price, forcing it down to a 52 week low of EUR 9.26.  More details here.  In the UK, it has also been announced that chandler Purple Marine has entered into administration.

Fishing fun

One of the great things about working at Nare is that it gives me the opportunity to road test interesting products.  I had great fun yesterday with the Plastimo Echofish 300 handheld fishfinder.  A brilliant bit of kit, its a handheld fishfinder that comes with a transducer you can hold in your hand whilst swimming, dangle off the end of a pontoon, drop over the side of a dinghy etc, etc.  Anyhow, its great – last nights score Fishfinder 2, Pollock 0 !

Top Sellers and seasickness…

Its really interesting to track our top selling products at Nare.  These tend to vary on a week by week basis, although some old favourites are consistently up there, such as our XM offshore suits and Plastimo Iris 50 handbearing compasses.  However, the one product that stands out as being both a consistent seller and something different is the Relief Band.  I’m a huge fan of this product, it personally works for me and I’ve heard of it being succesfully used for morning sickness as well as sea sickness.  Its a wierd concept, but more and more people seem to be switching onto the fact that it really does work.  A quick visit to Google shows that its even made it onto the radar of CNN.

A message to Charles Dunstone

Congratulations to Charles Dunstone, CEO and major shareholder of Carphone Warehouse for the £1.1 billion deal to sell 50% of the company to US retail giant Best Buy.  Dunstone is a sailing fanatic and owner of a TP52, “Red”.  If the Americas Cup ever straightens itself out, perhaps he might like to take a look at using some of that cash to increase his investment in the (currently sponsorless) Team Origin ?  Or then again, perhaps he might like to invest in the chandlery sector ?!

What do you say Charles ?

Coville to go again

We’ve just become Helly Hansen dealers at Nare and I’m a real fan of some of their products, to the extent that there’s a Helly Hansen Fjord jacket in the warehouse with my name on it.  They sponsor the Ericsson round the world team and Thomas Coville and according to their website, Sodebo is almost ready for another attempt on Francis Joyons solo circumnavigation record.  See the article here
